Are you eating enough superfood? Sunday January 8 2012
I’ve done some extensive online research and combining many lists of healthy ingredients, this is the ultimate super-food list! I can honestly say, since I’ve stopped eating food that’s rich on gluten, yeast and sugar, I’m eating a lot of these on a daily basis (2, 4, 6, 7, 9, 10, 19, 21, 23) or on a weekly basis (3, 5, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17, 18, 20, 22, 24). Only 1, 8, 11, 16 need some more attention, but it has to be said that these aren’t available all year round. How about you?

Great idea this is! Of this list I do NOT eat on a weekly basis ( or ever) 3,11,12,15,16and 20. Mostly because we live in a small village in the south of Spain and things like quinoa or bok choy is not that easy to buy. But because we are lucky to live here, I grow my own raspberries ( so not weekly available ) and I have a lemon tree that gives lemons the whole year around
and we live on the coast so lots of fresh fish for us. The apricots I eat mostly dried in the morning in my yogurt. I never looked at it like this, in a list. We just eat what we like. So, great to see that we are doing ok! I like this idea to think about what you can eat, instead of what you can“t.

What a great list. I consume most of these on a weekly basis and I also avoid wheat/gluten as well as sugars.
Figs, bok choy, and arugula I hardly ever eat but everything else is in my fridge/pantry all the time. I also don’t consume wheat germ or oatmeal often but I always have them on hand for my boyfriend.
I eat most of them regularly but can’t eat the gluten:)Also, can’t eat raspberries. Where are blueberries on the list? Those are supposed to be a super food too!
I never eat figs…will have to try! great list…thanks!
You forgot one. Chia seeds – the super, super food!
I would remove #19 and #23.
@Mysty, you’re probably right, though I do interpret #23 as soy or rice milk / yogurt in my case…
I’m not a big fan of wheat or gluten myself, #19, so I avoid them during the day, but I do need them in the morning. Do you have a good fiber rich alternative that’s good for breakfast (and please don’t say rye bread, ’cause I really dislike that). x, Maria.
@Tamara, you’re absolutely right, there are many more super foods, like acai berries, white tea, soy, et cetera. Even cacao is supposed to be one…
@Jen, figs are delicious, just cut them through the middle twice, in quarters, leaving them pieces together at the bottom. Fill them with a little bit of soft goat cheese and a tiny drop of honey and place them in a pre-heated oven for 5-10 minuten. Nomnomnom!
@ Mysty,
what’s wrong with Greek yogurt? I know dairy isn’t for everyone, but that doesn’t mean it’s not beneficial to those who do consume it.
The faux-yougurts don’t have the same amount of probiotics and protein that the others have.
Soy can be great, in moderation. A lot of it is a GMO. And then there’s the whole thing about about soy leading to the cutting down the rainforests in S.America so a lot of people have issues with that.
Also, pretty much every fruit and vegetable is a super food
Good list though!
Wonderful list & thanks for doing the research.
You should look into Moringa, although they grow naturally in more arid, dry climates they make great house plants and are packed full of nutrients…the leaves are good dried and sprinkled over any dish.
Hi Andrea, Never heard of that, but I will surely look into it! Thnx for the tip! X. Maria
What about , APPLES AND STRAWBERRIES , WITH SOME GREEK YOUGART, MASHED UP IN A SALAD BOWL, WITH A SPLASH OF LEMON AND LIME
I am a 54 year old guy , honey, apples , strawberries , lemon and lime and greek yougart with peanut butter i mix up in a big bowl and have it for my lunch, What else can I add to this,I am 54 and still have muscle tone and am trying to be healthy , I stay away from Red meat ,I eat all types of fish and also eat a handfull of nuts every day , I was taking loads of Vitamins , but I recently switched to whole food for my Vitamins , I just take a Multi vitamin , Any advice would be helpful to add to my regimen.
Shrimp? Let first say, my dad is a small commercial fisherman (Chesapeake Blue crabs and shrimp), so I love shrimp! But I thought shrimp were high in Cholesterol and since they are bottom feeders, not very clean (not to mention if you get them farm rasies (mostly Vietnam) they are raised in pretty gross conditions, this is what I have read).
Good list! Thanks!!

Lots of good healthy foods here. I’d eat a fair few of these regularly but especially the avocado, berries, nuts and greens.
Some of these are not superfoods. Most, yes but raisons are full of sugar. Purple grapes in the raw are way better for you. Yogurt is great for you if it is greek. Chia seeds, goji berries, blueberries, acai berries, cacoa in the raw, and kale are also missing as well as others. SKIM milk is garbage. It is chemically altered to remain white. Yuck. Whole milk is way better for you or sub it for coconut, almond or rice milk. .
I agree, its hard to include all the Super foods. Just wanna also mention ground flaxseeds.
Also…a healthier, lower glycemic load, alternative for honey, would be Agave nectar. Try adding to Greek yogurt.
What about eggs?
good info thank you. i have a small dilemma. i learned about a new exercise session a lot others have been talking about lately. i’ve been going througha lot of investigating onto it and it seems like this is a very great training course. a great deal of people are saying that it’s a very good program. i’ve been using it now for 2 weeks i’ve got to say i agree with others. here is a review i found onto it. what is your opinion with it? workout-reviews.net should i stick to this routine because it’s working very well.
Hello, thanks for the great list! I have researched and have found that Kale has more super cancer fighting antioxidants than broccoli or endives(shown to be beneficial in fighting ovarian cancer).
Great list. I think blueberries, apples and greek yogurt are more “super” than figs, but, hey–we all have our favorites!
