DIY b+w necklace made from shrink plastic Monday September 26 2011
A while ago I saw a necklace at the Etsy shop of Super Duper Things that I really wanted to have (as I loved her patterns and the b+w combination), but is now sadly no longer available. You can still see the image via Seventy Tree. So I’ve tried to make a more bold version myself, out of shrink plastic. Materials: sheet of white shrinky plastic, black permanent marker, black necklace and black eyelets. You can draw anything you like and cut out any shape you like (just remember you work of art will shrink approximately 9x). This example is just to show you what the possibilities are… Have you ever made jewelry with Shrinky Dinks?

GREAT necklace! How did you keep your shapes from skewing? Every time I try to make an angular pice, the plastic distorts.
Thanks!
Perhaps you turned the heat up too high? I turn my oven to 175 degrees celsius, it’s a hot-air oven / electric oven… None of mine got distorted, perhaps I’m just lucky?!
Good luck!!
Hi Maria,
I just wanted to let you know that I featured your tutorial on my site, http://www.AllFreeBeadedJewelry.com. I linked to this project:

Hi Maggie, great to see my tutorial on your site! You’re free to post my projects in full on your site and in your newsletter as well, as long as you credit it by linking back to my original post and include the name LIVLIG in your post. Love, Maria.
Great tutorial! When I shrunk them in the oven at 300 degrees F, they curved down so they looked like little hills. How can I stop this, and make them flat? thank you!
I fixed my previous issue! But do you recommend coating the pieces with anything like resin or some sealer?
Glad to read you solved the hill-issue!
As long as you color the plastic with permanent marker or colored pencil, then you don’t have to seal it. I guess sealing it could do the trick if you color it with regular markers… x. Maria
Thank you! so the sharpie design doesn’t fade or get messed up after some use?
The sharpie (permanent ones) does not fade at all (at least, I’ve worn mine a couple of times now, and no fading of smudging visible yet)!
Good luck, will you let me know what you’ve made by sending me a picture of a link to view?? x. Maria

[...] from livlig-online made this one out of shrinky dinks! I MUST TRY [...]
Greetings,
I have made this type of jewelry before… a charm bracelet. I used the plastic lids from Chinese take-out… Just be sure to look at the recycle stamp on it, if it is #6 it is shrink plastic and can be used just the same. Even if has ridges or scallops, once I put it in the oven (I use 200 degrees F) it will curl and shrink and eventually flatten out. If it is a little bumpy, right as I pull it out of the oven I use the flat side of a butter knife to press it flat.
Oh thank you so much for that tip! Much cheaper to make shrink plastic jewelry this way. I’ll be trying it out soon. x. Maria
Just wanted to let you know I found you thru http://www.allfreejewelrymaking.com/ Love your Geometric Necklace and can’t wait to try it. Thanks for sharing!
