Creme Fraiche D’Isigny: no regular diary product

Saturday July 7 2012

Do you know the feeling: you discover a new product that’s so great, you immediately want to share it with the rest of the world! In this case, I was at my local cheeseshop and discovered how creme fraiche is actually supposed to taste! And that is very different than the creme fraiche products you buy at the supermarket…

If you think creme fraiche is no more than a necessary evil to prepare an otherwise good recipe, think again and buy this Creme Fraiche D’Isigny, made in Normandy, France, the only cream in France to be protected by an Appellation d’Origine Controle. Made from the finest milks of the Bessin and Cotentin, and guaranteed not to contain any additives or coloring, this product will be a real eye-opener.

I used this creme to make Pear and Blue Cheese on Sourdough Toast, a recipe by At Down Under: delicious!

p.s. In the back is a freshly baked nuts-and-fruits-cake, a family recipe. It contains no eggs or butter and buttermilk instead of regular milk. Mix up 300 grams of self raising flour, 100 grams of dark brown sugar, dried dates, dried figs, raisins and walnuts and add approx. 400 ml buttermilk for a smooth batter. Bake in oven, preheated to 175 degrees Celsius for approx. one hour.

Forbidden Love

Friday May 25 2012

Aren’t they cute, this chocolate covered marshmallow bears by Katja?

I have a confession to make. Since recently I’ve got a secret crush for these Choco Bears! Full of bad ingredients like fructose, glucose, gelatin and sugar, and no less than 40 calories per little bear, but ohhh so delicious! They remind me of those chocolate covered candy I first found in the supermarket in Stockholm a few years ago, and recently rediscovered at Ikea. Ok, so not that good for you, but just give them a try!

Do you have a food-crush?

p.s. This is not a sponsored post.

I looove my chai!

Tuesday January 24 2012

Lately I’ve been completely addicted to the sweet taste of hot Chai Latte. There are a couple of ways to make your own Chai Latte. You could  f.i. get instant Chai Latte: just add some of the powder to a cup of hot milk. Drink Me Chai is definitely the most popular brand for this version, available in (fair-trade) spiced, vanilla, chocolate, peppermint and mango. I like vanilla the best.

You could also try making your own Chai Latte mix:

  • 1 teaspoon whole cloves
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
  • 1 teaspoon kardamomzaad
  • 1/2 tsp (grated) nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon (or cinnamon stick)
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger

Just add milk and regular black tea leaves. Drink Me Chai contains sugar, the DIY-version is too much work for my taste. So I tried a third alternative, which tastes pretty good and doesn’t contain any sugar or lactose (as my body doesn’t like either):

  • Revolution Bombay Chai tea, made with water
  • a bit of rice milk
  • a tiny bit of rice syrup

So easy, pretty “light” and truly warm and nomnomnom on cold winter nights!

==========

  24. salmon and shrimps

I’ve done some extensive online research and combining many lists of healthy ingredients, this is the ultimate super-food list! I can honestly say, since I’ve stopped eating food that’s rich on gluten, yeast and sugar, I’m eating a lot of these on a daily basis (2, 4, 6, 7, 9, 10, 19, 21, 23) or on a weekly basis (3, 5, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17, 18, 20, 22, 24). Only 1, 8, 11, 16 need some more attention, but it has to be said that these aren’t available all year round.

How about you?
