Tekenend voor de Valentijns-waanzin is de Japanse traditie. In 1958 is Valentijnsdag naar Japan gebracht. Sindsdien is het gewoonte geworden dat de vrouwen op die dag de mannen chocolade geven. Alleen chocolade en alleen de vrouwen geven dit aan de mannen. Maar zoals wel eens vaker met Japanse tradities, het is een beetje uit de hand gelopen en het is nagenoeg een verplichting geworden dat je als vrouw aan alle mannen die iets voor je betekenen (dus ook je collega’s, je baas, buurman, klasgenoten, vrienden) chocolade geeft. Zelfs als je hier zelf niet zo veel voor voelt. Wil je de volgende dag het niet heel moeilijk krijgen, dan geef je dus chocolade. Homemade aan je enige ware liefde,  ”obligatory” (verplicht, simpelere) chocolade aan de rest.

Maar dan komt het mooie, een maand later, vandaag 14 maart is het ホワイトデー, howaito de, witte dag. En dan horen de mannen iets terug te geven aan de vrouwen. Daar is dus bewust over nagedacht, dat deze dag exact een maand later moest vallen, zodat de mannen een maand bedenktijd hebben! Het begon in 1977 met witte marshmallows, al snel gevolgd door witte chocolade. Intussen is de dag uitgegroeid tot een serieuze tweede Valentijnsdag, waarop de mannen die honmei choco of giri choco (de eerder genoemde homemade chocolate) hebben gekregen, worden geacht kostbare kadootjes voor hun liefde te kopen! Maar goed, een bosje bloemen kost in Japan al gauw 60 euro…

En zo makkelijk te maken: heel veel hartjes in verschillende maten uit wat steviger papier knippen. Even onder de naaimachine door, en klaar is kees! De volgende keer gebruik ik wel iets steviger garen, want door een onderschatting van mijn eigen krachten brak de slinger aan het einde af toen ik iets te hard aan het garen trok.
